Summary of dataset and variables

What is the use table

This dataset contains a use table showing the value of products used within Wales or exported.

It sets out how much of each product is used by industries as intermediate inputs in the production process, how much is used by final users – including households, government and non-profit institutions serving households – and how much is used for capital formation or exported.

What is the table used for

The use table is used alongside the supply table to describe the relationship between supply and use in the economy, where total supply and total use of products are equal.

Together, the supply and use tables form the foundation for constructing the Welsh input-output tables and support wider national accounts analysis.

How is the table structured

Use of products is shown in the rows of the table.

The columns summarise the users of each product. Beneath the product rows, the table includes a summary of the value added by industries.

Unless noted otherwise, all figures are expressed in purchasers’ prices (which include taxes but exclude subsidies on products), and in millions of pounds.

Data collection or calculation

What data sources are used

The Welsh Government supply and use tables are compiled using a wide range of surveys, administrative datasets and other sources.

How these tables compare with earlier releases

This dataset should not be compared with the 2019 release, as the methods, data sources and presentation have been substantially revised.

Statistical quality

What you need to know about data quality

The supply, use and input-output tables are designated as Official Statistics in Development (Office for Statistics Regulation).

What are the key quality limitations

  • Some parts of the tables use UK-level patterns where Wales-specific data are not currently available, including production functions for non-manufacturing industries.
  • Some estimates are more uncertain than others, particularly imports, which rely on simplifying assumptions about supply chains.
  • Some business surveys do not cover parts of the Welsh economy, so we use apportionment methods and additional data sources where needed.

As a result, the tables are best used for analysing the economy and sectors as a whole rather than individual transactions.

Rounding applied

All values are rounded to 4 decimal places. As a result, totals and subtotals may not sum exactly.

Users requiring greater precision are advised to download the data tables in OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format from the Welsh Government website.
