Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

The dataset shows the number of primary, secondary and chimney fires by month, motive, Fire and Rescue Authority area, location type and financial year. Location types for primary fires include dwellings, other buildings, road vehicles and other outdoor locations. Location type is not included in this dataset for secondary and chimney fires.

Data collection or calculation

Starting in the financial year 2025-26, data has been extracted from the Fire and Rescue Data Platform (FaRDaP) administered by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

Between 2009-10 and 2024-25, data was extracted from the Incident Recording System (IRS). Prior to 2009-10, data was collected using an FDR (Fire Data Report) form.

Statistical quality

FaRDaP (and the IRS before it) is a live system and so data extracted at a different time may not match the figures in this table. Data are revised each year, and data for the latest financial year is marked as provisional.

Statistics for years prior to 2009-10 can be less robust due to the improvements in data collection accompanying the introduction of the IRS. For example, all chimney fires were assumed to be accidental prior to 2009-10, as deliberate chimney fires were not collected prior to the IRS.

Monthly totals for accidental and deliberate secondary fires are not available for 2008-09.

Please see the Quality Report for further information.
