Overview
- Summary of dataset and variables
The information presented here shows the number of active general practices by practice size and local health board at every quarterly snapshot date since 30 September 2015.
- Data collection or calculation
Practice size is defined as the number of overall staff (headcount) in a practice, grouped into bands of 10. The data are presented with locums (temporary staff) both included and excluded in the total headcount determining the practice size.
From 30 September 2025, general practice workforce data are sourced from the Primary Care Workforce Intelligence System (PCWIS), which supersedes the Wales National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS) that had been the data source since 2020.
- Statistical quality
The practice size breakdown is only available from March 2020 onwards in-line with the dates where we have received data from the Welsh National Workforce Reporting System (WNWRS).
Locum headcount is not available before June 2021 and is therefore not part of the total headcount used to determine practice size in the ‘all staff including GP locums’ data before this date. For comparisons across periods before and after June 2021, we recommend using the ‘all staff excluding GP locums’ data, as it excludes locums at all snapshot dates.
Up to March 2019, general practices in Bridgend were categorised as part of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. From June 2019, they have been categorised as part of the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. There is a step-change in the data as a result.
