Summary of dataset and variables

This data shows the number of dental contracts and practices.

Data collection or calculation

The data is derived from dental activity forms submitted for payment and processed by NHS Business Services Authority Dental Services.

Data is based on at least one FP17W or FP17OW being submitted by a contract at a dental practice.

Dental contract: a dental practitioner or group of dental practitioners that enter into contract with a Local Health Board to provide NHS dental services. More than one dental practitioner can perform NHS dental work under the same contract (for example, the practitioner who enters the contract may sub-contract to other dental practitioners to perform work under the same contract).

Dental practice: the geographic location where dental treatment took place. Each location can have work performed there by different dental practitioners who may have entered into separate dental contracts with the Local Health Board.

Statistical quality

If a dentist enters an outdated location ID on the FP17W form, the associated contract and practice may not be included in the source data, despite having submitted an FP17W during the financial year. As this issue occurs in practice, the data may not capture all contracts and practices that recorded dental activity during the year.
