Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

The information presented here shows the number of patients registered with each GP practice in Wales by gender, 5 year age band and GP practice. Data are also available for primary care clusters and local health boards.

Between 16/10/25 and 21/10/25, historical values for Newport East, Newport West, Newport North, North Cynon, South Cynon, Dwyfor & North Meirionnydd and South Meirionnydd were incorrect. Health board and Wales totals were not affected.

Data collection or calculation

This StatsWales cube is based on data extracted quarterly by NHS Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) from the Welsh Demographic Service system ‘[which is then published on their website] (https://nwssp.nhs.wales/ourservices/primary-care-services/general-information/data-and-publications/prescribing-data-extracts/gp-practice-analysis/)’. Data prior to October 2024 was extracted from National Health Application and Infrastructure Services (NHAIS).

The data for 2016 to 2019 represent the position on 1st October. The quarterly data from April 2020 are extracted around the middle of the month, usually between the 10th and 16th.

Data for patients with an ‘indeterminate’ gender is not included in the totals.

Note this StatsWales cube includes some practices that are not subject to the General Medical Services (GMS) contract.

Changes to clusters:

The Dwyfor & North Meirionnydd and South Meirionnydd clusters changed as of 1 April 2021, because of Ffestiniog Memorial Centre (W94004) and Bron Meirion (W94032) moving from South Meirionnydd to Dwyfor & North Meirionnydd.

The North Cynon and South Cynon clusters changed as of 2019, because of Cwmaman Surgery (W95016) and Abercwmboi Medical Centre (W95087) moving from North Cynon to South Cynon.

The Newport North cluster closed as of April 2020 and practices were allocated to Newport East and Newport West. The practices were Isca Medical Centre (W93018), Richmond Clinic (W93043), Westfield Medical Centre (W93045), St Julian’s Medical Centre (W93049), Malpas Brook Health Centre (W93051) and the Rogerstone Practice (W93061).

Statistical quality

These are extracted as a snapshot in time and are based on the main practice at which the GP is working each snapshot. Therefore some patients may move practice if a GP does more hours in one practice than another in a particular snapshot.

There is a known data quality issue for data in July 2024. This relates to a lower-than-expected number of English residents registered to Welsh practices, due to changes in how source data is processed. July 2024 data will not be revised as correct data is not retrievable; however the data quality issue has now been resolved and will not affect future data.

Breakdowns by age and gender are not available for practices with less than 1,000 patients, as this data is suppressed by NHS Shared Services Partnership to avoid disclosure.
