Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

The table shows the number of fires by category, location type, motive, fire and rescue authority and financial year.

Fire category includes primary, secondary and chimney fires.

Primary fires includes all fires in non-derelict buildings and vehicles or in outdoor structures or any fire involving casualties, rescues, or fires attended by five or more appliances.

Secondary fires are the majority of outdoor fires including grassland and refuse fires unless they involve casualties or rescues, property loss or five or more appliances attend. They include fires in single derelict buildings

Data collection or calculation

Starting in the financial year 2025-26, data has been extracted from the Fire and Rescue Data Platform (FaRDaP) administered by the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

Between 2009-10 and 2024-25, data was extracted from the Incident Recording System (IRS).

“Other dwelling” includes “houseboat”, “tenement”, “royal palace”, “stately home”, and “castle” in addition to incidents recorded using the “other dwelling” category.

Statistical quality

' FaRDaP (and the IRS before it) is a live system and so data extracted at a different time may not match the figures in this table. Data are revised each year, and data for the latest financial year is marked as provisional.

Please see the Quality Report for further information.
