Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

This dataset presents the distribution of statutory attendance codes for pupils in the secondary school-age annual attendance collection in Wales. It shows each attendance code as a percentage of its attendance category, its broad attendance category and all recorded attendance-code sessions.

Data collection or calculation

Attendance data are collected annually from maintained schools in Wales through the statutory school attendance collection. The secondary school-age collection covers pupils aged 11 to 15 and attendance from the start of the academic year to the late May Spring bank holiday. Session counts are grouped into statutory attendance codes, attendance categories and broad attendance categories, and percentages are calculated against the relevant category totals.

Statistical quality

Annual attendance collection data is not available for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 academic years because the collection was suspended during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The secondary school-age collection covers attendance only up to the late May Spring bank holiday and is not directly comparable with the full-year primary school-age collection.
