Overview
- Summary of dataset and variables
This dataset shows the number of Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) 5 appointments in Wales by patient age group and ethnic group.
WGOS 5 is a provision of eye care services in primary care that require an independent prescriber optometrist to manage, treat and monitor patients to prevent onward referral.
- Data collection or calculation
The WGOS 5 claims are submitted electronically through Microsoft forms to NHS Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) and uploaded onto their K2 payments system.
A claim-level dataset is then provided to the Welsh Government, including the patient's age and ethnicity for each claim.
- Statistical quality
Ethnicity is collected as free text and has been mapped to standard ethnicity categories. Where responses were ambiguous or did not directly correspond to a standard category, classifications were assigned based on best judgement and therefore there may be a degree of misclassification. However, ambiguous entries make up a small proportion of appointments.
Data for the financial year 2024 to 2025 are not directly comparable with data for the financial year 2025 to 2026 onwards as WGOS 5 was introduced at different times across health boards during the financial year 2024 to 2025.
