Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

This dataset presents attendance and absence percentages for pupils in the secondary school-age annual attendance collection in Wales. It shows the percentage of possible half-day sessions attended, missed, missed for authorised absence and missed for unauthorised absence.

Data collection or calculation

Attendance data are collected annually from maintained schools in Wales through the statutory school attendance collection. The secondary school-age collection covers pupils aged 11 to 15 and attendance from the start of the academic year to the late May Spring bank holiday. Attendance percentages are calculated from possible half-day sessions and authorised and unauthorised absence sessions.

Statistical quality

Annual attendance collection data is not available for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 academic years because the collection was suspended during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The secondary school-age collection covers attendance only up to the late May Spring bank holiday and is not directly comparable with the full-year primary school-age collection.

Rounding applied

All published percentages are rounded to one decimal place.
