Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

This dataset shows the number of Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) 5 appointments in Wales by appointment outcome and appointment type. The percentages show the proportion of appointments of each appointment type resulting in each outcome.

WGOS 5 is a provision of eye care services in primary care that require an independent prescriber optometrist to manage, treat and monitor patients to prevent onward referral. Outcomes include patients being referred out of WGOS 5, continuing with WGOS 5 follow-up, or being discharged from the pathway.

The dataset provides insight into how patient outcomes vary by type of appointment, health board, and over time.

Data collection or calculation

The WGOS 5 claims are submitted electronically through Microsoft forms to NHS Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) and uploaded onto their K2 payments system.

Initial appointments include a small number of 'initital HES discharge' appointments.

Statistical quality

Data for the financial year 2024 to 2025 are not directly comparable with data for the financial year 2025 to 2026 onwards as WGOS 5 was introduced at different times across health boards during the financial year 2024 to 2025.
