Overview
- Summary of dataset and variables
This dataset shows the number of Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) 4 appointments in Wales by outcome of appointment, type of eye disease, health board and financial year. For each disease type, the percentage of appointments by appointment outcome is also shown.
WGOS 4 is a service where patients who would previously have been referred to/or managed in the Hospital Eye Service (HES) instead remain in primary care for further enhanced assessment as part of an agreed referral refinement or monitoring pathway.
Outcomes include discharge, referral to Hospital Eye Services (HES) and referral to WGOS 4.
- Data collection or calculation
The WGOS 4 claims are submitted electronically through Microsoft forms to NHS Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) and uploaded onto their K2 payments system.
The outcome of appointment categories are categorised as follows from the raw data:
Referred to WGOS 4: includes 'WGOS 4' and 'WGOS4 with IP used to prevent an onward referral to HES'
Referred to hospital: includes 'Referral to HES' and 'Refer to HES for possible/definite toxicity'
Discharged: includes 'Discharge' and 'Discharge with IP used to prevent an onward referral to HES'
In addition, there are separate categories for 'No HES referral' and 'Report sent to prescribing physician' (which are associated with a small number of appointments).
- Statistical quality
Data for the financial year 2024 to 2025 are not directly comparable with data for the financial year 2025 to 2026 onwards as WGOS 4 was introduced at different times across health boards during the financial year 2024 to 2025.
Appointments where the disease type is not recorded relate to hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) patients.
