Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

A smoking cessation service provides evidence-based behavioural support and advice to smokers who are motivated to attempt to stop smoking. This includes the dedicated specialist national Help Me Quit service (formally known as Stop Smoking Wales), Level 3 smoking cessation services delivered by community pharmacies and any ‘in-house’ services which are available in hospitals and GP surgeries in Wales.

This table provides data on smoking quit attempts via smoking cessation services and treated smokers who were CO-validated (carbon monoxide validated) as successfully quitting in individual quarters and cumulative quarters within a financial year (April to March) for each health board across Wales. The table shows, for Welsh residents:

  • the number of smokers treated by smoking cessation services
  • the estimated number of smokers
  • the percentage of the estimated number of smokers who made a quit attempt via smoking cessation services
  • the number of treated smokers who were CO-validated as successfully quitting at 4 weeks post quit date
  • the percentage of treated smokers who were CO-validated as successfully quitting at 4 weeks post quit date

For data from the quarter ending June 2014 to the quarter ending September 2019, the individual smoking cessation services were: Stop Smoking Wales Level 3 pharmacy based services In house hospital based services In house GP based services Specialist maternity service (reported separately from quarter ending June 2018)

From the quarter ending December 2019 Stop Smoking Wales was rebranded as Help Me Quit. As a result, the individual smoking cessation services from this date are: Help Me Quit - community Help Me Quit – pharmacy level 3 Help Me Quit - hospital services Help Me Quit for baby In house GP based service (reported as part of Help Me Quit – community from quarter ending June 2021).

Due to the COVID-19 transmission risk associated with the procedure, CO-validation was not undertaken by health boards from quarter ending June 2020 to quarter ending March 2024. During this time data collection and publication of statistics relating to CO-validation was suspended. From quarter ending June 2024, all health boards have resumed CO-validation and hence data collection and publication has recommenced.

Data collection or calculation

The NHS Wales Performance Division in Welsh Government receive quarterly Smoking Cessation reporting forms from each health board. Standards relating to the forms have been reviewed and passed by the Welsh Information Standards Board (WISB) and the Welsh Information Development Group (WIDG) (previously known as the Data Standards Change Notice Sub-group).

Statistical quality

The NHS Wales Performance Division in Welsh Government upload the data received quarterly. The data processing system used ensures that data is not missing from the returns. Further validation and verification checks are then undertaken quarterly, including, for example, checking trends in the data and any significant drops in performance against targets set. Any abnormalities in the data are noted and are raised with the relevant health board, thus enabling health board to check, correct or comment on their data and to provide contextual information where relevant.

If a data value previously published is found to be incorrect and subsequently is corrected or has been changed to improve accuracy, an r will be added to the relevant data value in the next publication.
