Overview
- Summary of dataset and variables
This dataset presents persistent absence at the 10% threshold for pupils in the secondary school-age annual attendance collection in Wales by sex and year group. It includes the percentage of pupils by persistent-absence status and attendance/absence percentages for those pupils.
- Data collection or calculation
Attendance data are collected annually from maintained schools in Wales through the statutory school attendance collection. The secondary school-age collection covers pupils aged 11 to 15 and attendance from the start of the academic year to the late May Spring bank holiday. Attendance percentages are calculated from possible half-day sessions and authorised and unauthorised absence sessions. Persistent absence is presented at the 10% threshold, based on 10% of the most common number of sessions pupils were required to attend. Historic persistent-absence values in these datasets have already been recalculated on this 10% basis.
- Statistical quality
Annual attendance collection data is not available for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 academic years because the collection was suspended during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The secondary school-age collection covers attendance only up to the late May Spring bank holiday and is not directly comparable with the full-year primary school-age collection.
- Rounding applied
All published percentages are rounded to one decimal place.
