Overview

Summary of dataset and variables

This dataset shows the number of eye health examinations delivered through the Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) 2 scheme. WGOS 2 provides accessible, community-based eye care for patients presenting with acute eye problems or at risk of eye disease. The data is broken down by examination band, patient age group, and financial year. Examination bands classify the type of eye examination. Band 1: acute eye care and referrals from another healthcare professional; Band 2: further examination to inform or prevent a referral; and Band 3: follow up to Band 1 and Post Cataract Assessment. Prior to 2023-24, similar services were provided under the Eye Health Examination Wales (EHEW) scheme.

Data collection or calculation

The data is based on claims made by practices to NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (NWSSP) for payment. Practices submit an EHEW form to NWSSP and this data is then processed on their K2 payments system. Data is extracted from the K2 system and supplied to Welsh Government.
The data is grouped by screening type into three bands, summing across domiciliary, part domiciliary, and optometric settings for each band, while also categorising age groups into specific ranges. Totals are calculated by aggregating data by year, band, and age group, with additional totals for Wales by summing across health boards.

Statistical quality

On 1 April 2019, health service responsibility for Bridgend residents moved from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg to Cwm Taf. Health board names also changed: Cwm Taf became Cwm Taf Morgannwg, and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg became Swansea Bay. See the weblinks section for official statements.
